A very warm welcome to HOW GREEN ARE MY WELLIES, The Climate Change resource for education

A scotland_august_2007_120.jpgBrief History

HowGreenAreMyWellies was founded by three Bristol based teachers who, in early 2007, needed a way for groups of secondary school classes to use the net for climate change projects in science, geography and PSHE as part of the National Curriculum, without pupils having to surf all over the place and wasting a great deal time. Originally the information was handed out in printed format of recommended websites. This proved cumbersome and was dropped to be replaced by a very elementary website with the domain name of www.howgreenaremywellies.co.uk allowing access at both school and home.
The new website proved popular, so popular in fact the it started attracting visitors from other UK schools, and as far away as Australia,  New Zealand, Canada, The United Arab Emirates, and Russia. By the summer term it was evident from the amount of material going onto the site, and the amount of traffic using it, that a more professional website site was urgently required. Thanks to a grant from South West Business this was achieved by mid-October 2007, when the present site was launched with the aim of being a broad climate change resource for education, providing up to date information to assist all users from secondary education, through further, higher, postgraduate education and beyond in their studies and project work, and eventually with careers.
To-day the website comprises of fourteen main categories: Advertisers. Energy. Environment. Food. Health. Horticulture. Landbased Studies. Lifestyle. Recycling.Transport, and Green Holidays. Within each main category there are sections on courses ranging from apprentices to postgraduate at full-time, part-time, and distance learning, in addition to careers information relating to that particular category. There are over 350 major articles on climate change with more added daily. The site serves over 400,000 teachers and lecturers from secondary education to postgraduate. It has been receiving up to 1500 visitors a-week. The website has been noted and praised by 10 Downing Street, and Defra.
NUMBER OF VISITORS SINCE OCTOBER 2007:

info.gifHOW TO SEARCH FOR INFORMATION.    CLICK  the SEARCH button, top right hand corner. Read the instructions. Type in the keywod of your subject e.g. Birds. CLICK SEARCH. You will then be given a list of all the places 'birds' appear on the website. CLICK on the entry that interests you.  The secret of this method is to keep your request simple, one word if possible, e.g. if you type in Birds in climate change, not only will you get a list of birds, but pages of everything on climate change!

U.K. households are now facing a 40% plus, rise in their energy bills. The average bill is expected to top £1,000 a year when power companies reveal the full scale of their price hikes. This is on top of the current credit crunch signaling a bleak winter for the four million Britons struggling to pay their power bills."ALTERNATIVE DOMESTIC ENERGY ADVICE AND SOURCES, we hope, can offer help to aleviate some of that pain!
